El Pilar, also known as Velluters, is one of the six neighborhoods of the Ciutat Vella district in Valencia. It lies west of the historic centre and borders El Carmen to the north, El Mercado to the east, San Francisco to the south and El Botánico to the west.
Its official name comes from the Convent of Our Lady of the Pillar, run by the Dominicans and founded in 1611; its church still stands on the square of the same name. The name Velluters is the most popular one, from the many silk and velvet workshops set up here from the fifteenth century.
