Get to know El Arenal

El Arenal is a neighbourhood in the historic centre of Seville, the Casco Antiguo. It lies on the east bank of the Guadalquivir, west of the old Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz, and its name comes from the sandy ground of that bank. It has an estimated 3,798 inhabitants.

The area was Seville's port until silting of the river forced the city to move it to the southern edge in the 17th century. Among its monuments are the Torre del Oro, a 13th-century Moorish watchtower, the Reales Atarazanas royal shipyards and the La Maestranza bullring, the second most important in Spain after Las Ventas in Madrid.
