Get to know Santander

Santander is the capital of Cantabria and its most populated municipality, at the head of a metropolitan area around the bay of Santander. The Romans knew it as Portus Victoriae. Banco Santander was founded here and keeps its headquarters in the city, and the Menéndez Pelayo International University holds its summer courses here.

Much of the old city was lost in the Great Fire of 1941, and today the Magdalena Palace, the cathedral and the buildings of the Paseo de Pereda stand out. The port is still very active, with a regular ferry service to the United Kingdom. Expect a beach, a mild climate with frequent rain and a cuisine built on fish and seafood.
