Murcia is the capital and largest city of the Region of Murcia, in south-eastern Spain. Abd ar-Rahman II, Emir of Córdoba, founded it in 825 as Mursiyah. Today it is mainly a services city and a university town.
Puente Tocinos, San Benito, Cabezo de Torres, La Alberca, Santiago y Zaraiche, Torreagüera, Churra and El Esparragal all belong to the municipality. The cathedral, baroque buildings, sculptures by Francisco Salzillo, Holy Week and the Spring Festival stand out. Summers are hot, winters mild and rain is fairly scarce.
