Monforte de Lemos is a town in the south of the province of Lugo, Galicia, and the second most populous municipality in the province after Lugo itself. It had its golden age in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as capital of the County of Lemos. The railway arrived in 1883 and made it the main rail junction in Galicia, where the line from the Meseta splits towards Vigo and A Coruña.

On the hill that gives the town its name stand the monastery of San Vicente do Pino and the remains of the castle, including its keep. The old bridge over the Cabe River is medieval, though locals call it the Roman bridge, and the town also has the College of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua. Beyond the town, the municipality spreads over 26 rural parishes, among them Piñeira, Ribasaltas, Distriz, Moreda, Reigada, Seoane and Santa Mariña do Monte.
