The Province of Lugo lies in the northeast of Galicia, with the city of Lugo as its capital, home to over a quarter of its people. The capital began as a Celtic settlement named after the god Lugh, later Lucus Augusti, one of the main Galician-Roman centres. The province borders Ourense, Pontevedra, A Coruña, León, Asturias and the Cantabrian Sea.

Its comarcas include Terra Chá, Os Ancares, Tierra de Lemos, Sarria, Ulloa, Chantada, A Fonsagrada and the Lugo comarca. The Miño and the Sil are the main rivers, and on the coast the Eo forms the border with Asturias at the Ribadeo estuary.
