Get to know La Axarquía
Axarquía is a comarca in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, a wedge-shaped area east of the city of Málaga. Its name goes back to the Arabic for the eastern region. It stretches along the coast and inland, and the people who live here are called axárquicos.
Vélez-Málaga is its capital. Together with Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Algarrobo and Nerja it forms the Costa del Sol Oriental, while Cómpeta, Colmenar and Frigiliana lie inland. The Vélez, Algarrobo and Torrox rivers run through the area, and its highest peak is La Maroma in the Sierra de Tejeda.
