Get to know Candelaria

Candelaria is a municipality on the east side of Tenerife, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. It is also called Villa Mariana, as it holds the Virgin of Candelaria, patron of the islands. Every 2 February and on 14 and 15 August, pilgrims come from all over the archipelago.

The town lies on the coast, southwest of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Beside the Basilica of Candelaria stand statues of the nine Guanche kings of Tenerife. Nearby is the Achbinico cave, the first Christian shrine of the Canaries.
