Zarautz · 8 min walk
A town on the central Gipuzkoa coast with the longest beach in the Basque Country, a surfing hotspot about 15 km from San Sebastián.
Zarautz is a coastal town in the comarca of Urola Costa, in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, set between Aia and Getaria. Ferdinand III of Castile founded it in 1237, and until the sixteenth century its people lived from fishing, especially whaling. Today it is a holiday town where most people speak Basque.
Its beach, the longest in the Basque Country, is nicknamed the Queen of Beaches and hosts qualifying events of the World Surf League. Facing it stands the Palace of Narros, where Queen Isabella II and Fabiola of Belgium spent their summers. At the eastern end, around a golf course, the protected Iñurritza biotope brings together dunes, marshes and cliffs.
