A provincial capital on the Duero with more Romanesque churches than any other city in Europe.
Zamora is the capital of the province of Zamora in Castile and León, close to the border with Portugal. Known as the city of the Romanesque, it has more Romanesque churches than anywhere else in Europe, along with a cathedral, a castle and city walls. Holy Week is its biggest celebration and is declared of International Tourist Interest.
The old town sits on a rocky plateau above the Duero, which runs along its southern edge, and much of it is still ringed by walls. That earned the city the nickname la bien cercada, the well-walled one. Besides its Romanesque heritage, Zamora also keeps a group of Modernista buildings.
