Vélez-Rubio is a town in the southeastern part of the Los Vélez comarca, in the province of Almería, Andalusia. It is the seat of both the municipality and the comarca and has its own judicial district. The town sits at 847 metres in the Guadalentín valley.

The municipality is split into six population units grouping twenty-nine settlements, among them El Espadín, El Charche and El Ginte-Bolaimi. The Chirivel and Nogalte ramblas run across it. Neighbours include Vélez-Blanco, María, Chirivel, Albox, Taberno and Huércal-Overa, plus Puerto Lumbreras and Lorca on the Murcian side.
