The capital of the Axarquía, in the valley of the Vélez river between the mountains and the Mediterranean, and Spain's top avocado grower.
Vélez-Málaga, locally just Vélez, is a town in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, and the capital of La Axarquía comarca. The Catholic Monarchs granted it the title of city in 1487. Its old town, with Mudéjar and Baroque palaces, churches and convents, is a protected historic site.
More than half of the residents live in the main town, in neighbourhoods such as La Viña, El Tomillar and Las Malvinas, and the rest in coastal developments and farmhouses inland. The municipality follows the Vélez valley down to the sea, where Torre del Mar and the fishing port of Caleta de Vélez lie. Mangoes, custard apples, loquats and above all avocados grow on its farms.
