Get to know Valencia de Alcántara

Valencia de Alcántara is a municipality in the province of Cáceres, in Extremadura. It borders Portugal and the province of Badajoz, and the river Sever separates it from the Portuguese border. It is the capital of the judicial district of Valencia de Alcántara and of the Sierra de San Pedro association of municipalities.

Its closeness to the border gave it great historical importance. Between 1644 and 1668 it was occupied by the Kingdom of Portugal, and its most important monuments were built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Even so, it is best known for its prehistoric dolmens. Besides the town itself, the municipality includes hamlets such as Alcorneo, El Pino and Las Huertas de Cansa.
