Torrelavega is an industrial and commercial city in Cantabria, the region's most important urban centre after Santander. It is the capital of the Besaya comarca and a regional hub for industry and transport. Its weekly livestock fair is famous across Spain.

The city lies in a valley about 8 kilometers from the Cantabrian coast, where the Saja and Besaya rivers flow together. Pilgrims on the Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago pass through on its Besaya route. The Cave of Altamira, with its prehistoric paintings, is about 10 kilometers away.
