Get to know Toledo

Toledo is a city in Castilla-La Mancha, capital of its province and seat of the regional parliament and government. Once the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, it is known as the imperial city and the city of three cultures, after the centuries when Christians, Jews and Muslims lived here side by side. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1986.

The old town, with its Gothic cathedral, sits on a hill on the right bank of the Tagus. Two districts lie well away from the centre: Azucaica on the same bank and Santa María de Benquerencia, known as the Polígono, on the left bank. Avant trains link Toledo with Madrid, and the city keeps its long tradition of sword making.
