Get to know Talavera de la Reina
Talavera de la Reina is a town in the province of Toledo, in the northwest of Castilla-La Mancha, and the second most populous municipality in the province. Its name dates from 1328, when King Alfonso XI gave the town to his bride, Maria of Portugal. It is best known for its pottery, which UNESCO declared intangible cultural heritage in 2019.
Most of the town lies on the right bank of the Tagus, close to where the Alberche joins it. Two islands, Isla Grande and Chamelo Island, sit in the river in the middle of town, and three bridges cross it. Its best-known festival, Las Mondas, comes from a Roman spring celebration in honour of Ceres.
