Get to know Soutomaior

Soutomaior is a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, in Galicia, and belongs to the comarca of Vigo. It stands on the left bank of the mouth of the river Verdugo, at the head of the San Simón inlet, in the Ría de Vigo.

Two parishes make it up, Arcade and Soutomaior, and Arcade is the main settlement. Soutomaior Castle, medieval in origin, stands on a hill and was the home of Pedro Álvarez de Soutomaior, known as Pedro Madruga. The botanical gardens around it are recognised as an International Camellia Garden of Excellence, and Arcade holds the Festa da Ostra every year.
