Sopela, formerly known as Sopelana, is a town and municipality in the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country. It belongs to the Uribe comarca, also called Plentzia-Mungia, and meets the Cantabrian Sea to the north. Its cliffs and the beaches of Barinatxe, Arrietara, Atxabiribil and Meñakoz shape the landscape.

It borders Barrika, Getxo, Urduliz and Berango. The town lies north-east of Bilbao among green hills and beaches, and works as a suburb of Greater Bilbao with a metro link.
