Get to know Somontano de Barbastro

Somontano de Barbastro is a comarca in the province of Huesca, Aragon, with Barbastro as its capital. Somontano means beneath the mountain, and the area lies in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Farming has always shaped it: wheat, grains, olives, livestock and a wine with its own denomination of origin since 1984.

Barbastro is home to most of the population and serves as a hub for the food industry, while villages include Estadilla, Peralta de Alcofea, El Grado, Alquézar, Castejón del Puente and Berbegal. Four rivers flow down from the north: the Alcanadre, Cinca, Ésera and Vero. The Sierra de Guara has canyons, gorges and limestone caves with prehistoric paintings.
