A working-class town on the left bank of the Bilbao estuary, on metro line 2, with a blast furnace listed as a monument.
Sestao is a town and municipality in Biscay, in the Basque Country, on the left bank of the Estuary of Bilbao and part of Bilbao's metropolitan area. It was home to Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, the most important steelworks of Biscay, and to the Astilleros del Nervión and La Naval shipyards. The industrial restructuring of the late twentieth century closed large plants and cost the town many residents.
The municipality is small, just 3.5 km². Line 2 of the Bilbao metro and town buses link it to the rest of the area. Since the early twenty-first century, the lower neighbourhoods and old industrial land have been redeveloped, and the old blast furnace is preserved as a monument.
