A town on the Oja River in La Rioja, founded on the Way of St James and known for its live rooster and hen in the cathedral.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a municipality in La Rioja Alta, on the banks of the Oja River. It takes its name from its founder, Domingo García, who built a bridge, a hospital and a hostel here for pilgrims on the Way of St James.
A live rooster and hen are always kept in the cathedral. They recall a miracle attributed to the saint, in which a roasted hen came back to life to prove a pilgrim innocent. The town also heads the comarca that shares its name.
