Get to know Santa Cruz de La Palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of the island of La Palma, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands. Founded in 1493, its wide bay became one of the key trading stops between Europe and America. In 1773 it had the first democratically elected town hall in Spain, and its Baroque old town is a protected heritage site.

The municipality runs from the ridge of Cumbre Nueva down to the Atlantic Ocean. The town has neighbourhoods such as La Luz, San Telmo, El Puente and La Alameda, while La Dehesa, Mirca and Velhoco lie on the slopes above, near the Royal Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Snows. Together with neighbouring Breña Alta it forms the urban area that holds the island's airport and university hospital.
