A town at the mouth of the Guadalquivir, facing Doñana, famous for manzanilla sherry, prawns and horse racing on the beach.
Sanlúcar de Barrameda is a municipality in the Costa Noroeste comarca, in the province of Cádiz. It sits on the left bank of the Guadalquivir estuary, opposite Doñana National Park. Magellan and Elcano's first voyage around the world set out from here and returned here.
The town was declared a historic-artistic site in 1973, and the Medina Sidonia palace holds the archive of that noble house. Its cuisine centres on manzanilla, a variety of fino sherry, and prawns. Flamenco and the summer horse races on the beach are known internationally.
