San Roque, just north of the Rock, was founded by Spaniards who left Gibraltar in 1704 and is known as Gibraltar in exile.
San Roque is a town in the Campo de Gibraltar comarca, at the south-eastern tip of the province of Cádiz in Andalusia, close to the Strait of Gibraltar. It was founded by Spanish residents who fled Gibraltar after its seizure by Anglo-Dutch forces in 1704. The town is officially regarded as the city of Gibraltar in exile and keeps its old archives, symbols and titles.
Besides the main town, the municipality takes in Campamento, Puente Mayorga, Guadarranque, Taraguillas, La Estación, San Diego, Guadiaro, San Enrique, Torreguadiaro and Sotogrande. San Roque itself sits a short way inland from the north side of the Bay of Gibraltar.
