Get to know San Lorenzo de El Escorial

San Lorenzo de El Escorial lies in the northwest of the Community of Madrid, on the southeastern side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, 47 km from Madrid. Locals call it El Escorial de Arriba to tell it apart from the neighbouring village of El Escorial. The Monastery of El Escorial, with its Royal Library, stands here and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

The town first grew around the monastery and gradually climbed the slopes of Mount Abantos, so most of the urban area sits above 1,000 metres. The Valley of Cuelgamuros also lies within the municipality. Since 2006 the whole municipality has been protected as a Property of Cultural Interest.
