A university city on the Tormes river, home to one of Western Europe's oldest universities and a UNESCO-listed Old City.
Salamanca is the capital of the province of Salamanca in Castile and León, set on the northern Meseta Central astride the Tormes. The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, brings in a large number of students, and the city is also a centre for learning Spanish. Its Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for plateresque architecture.
The historic centre gathers the Plaza Mayor, the Old and New cathedrals, the Casa de las Conchas and the San Esteban convent. Beyond Centro, the city spreads into neighbourhoods such as Garrido Norte, Prosperidad, San Bernardo, Pizarrales and San José. Holy Week here holds the status of a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest.
