Requena is a municipality in the western interior of the province of Valencia and the administrative capital of the comarca of La Plana de Utiel-Requena. Until the creation of the Spanish provinces in 1836, it belonged to Castile, as part of the province of Cuenca, which is why its land is called the Castilian Valencia. Spanish is the local language.

Its municipal area is one of the largest in Spain and covers much of the upper basin of the Magro. The town stands on the river's left bank.
