Purchena is a town and municipality in the province of Almería, in Andalusia, in the Almanzora Valley comarca. It stands on the right bank of the Almanzora river, between the foothills of the Sierra de los Filabres and those of the Sierra de las Estancias. Woods climb toward the mountains here, in contrast with the drier land of neighbouring municipalities.
It has two main centres, Purchena and El Campillo de Purchena, plus scattered hamlets such as La Estación de Purchena, La Barriada del Judío and El Paraje de Gevas. For centuries it has been the geographic, historical, administrative and cultural centre of the Alto del Almanzora comarca.
