Portbou is a municipality in the far northeast of the Alt Empordà comarca, in the province of Girona, Catalonia. It stands on the Costa Brava next to the French border and is the northernmost Spanish town on the Mediterranean. The German philosopher Walter Benjamin has been buried here since 1940, and a monument by Dani Karavan honours him.

The terrain is rugged and, facing the Gulf of Lion, the town gets strong tramontana winds. The bay in the middle of the municipality is where most of the population lives. A marina was built there between 1994 and 2001.
