Get to know Pontevedra

Pontevedra is a city in Galicia, capital of both the province and the comarca of the same name. Its old town is the most important in Galicia after Santiago de Compostela, with squares of medieval origin, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major and the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin. Pedestrian-first planning has won the city international awards, including one from UN-Habitat.

The city sits by the sea at the mouth of the Lérez river, at the end of the Ria de Pontevedra, surrounded by hills. Besides the centre, the municipality includes parishes and neighbourhoods such as San Xosé, Lourizán, Salcedo, Mourente, Marcón, Campañó, Lérez and Xeve. It is also an important stop on the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago.
