The largest city in northern Extremadura, at the gateway to the Valle del Jerte.
Plasencia is a city and municipality in the north of the province of Cáceres, Extremadura. King Alfonso VIII of Castile founded it in 1186, close to the Reconquista borders with León and the Muslim south. It is the seat of its own diocese and the second most populous municipality in the province.
The city sits at the gateway to the Valle del Jerte, and its municipality also includes the villages of San Gil and Pradochano. Here the old Roman road Vía de la Plata, now a hiking route, once marked the border with León. The economy runs mainly on services, with over a thousand shops in the city.
