Get to know Peñíscola

Peníscola is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Maestrat, in the province of Castellón, Valencian Community, on the Costa del Azahar, north of the Serra d'Irta. It has 8774 inhabitants (2025). Since 2013 it has belonged to the network Los pueblos más bonitos de España.

The first settlement grew around the rock, and today the municipality covers the whole shoreline, up to the border with Benicarló to the north. It was an Iberian, Roman, Muslim and Christian enclave, and a papal seat during the Western Schism, when Pope Benedict XIII settled in its castle. Fishing and tourism support its economy.
