Calle Pintada, 23. Peñafiel, Valladolid, Castile and León, Spain
Town in Ribera del Duero, in Valladolid, with a castle on a rock and wine caves dug into the hillside.
Peñafiel is a town in the province of Valladolid, in Castile and León, best known for its castle and for its medieval bullring square, the Plaza del Coso. It sits at the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region. In the Middle Ages it was a very important centre and had up to 19 churches.
Its name comes from the Latin Pinna Fidelis, the loyal rock. The castle, visible from kilometres away, houses the Wine Museum of Valladolid and looks out over the town. Below it, many wine caves were dug to keep wine at a constant temperature, and their chimney vents dot the landscape. The municipality also includes Aldeayuso, Mélida and Padilla de Duero.
