Pasaia, Gipuzkoa, Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, Spain
Herrera · 10 min walk
A Gipuzkoa town of four villages around its bay and port, running straight into the eastern neighbourhoods of San Sebastián.
Pasaia is a municipality in the Donostialdea comarca of Gipuzkoa, set on a natural bay at the estuary of the river Oiartzun. Its fishing and cargo port is the third most important in the Basque Country, after Bilbao and Bayonne. The admiral Blas de Lezo and the fashion designer Paco Rabanne were born here.
Four villages ring the estuary, Pasai San Pedro, Pasai Donibane, Pasai Antxo and Trintxerpe, at the foot of Mount Ulia and the Jaizkibel massif, and the municipality also includes Molinao. Trintxerpe and Antxo merge into eastern San Sebastián, and on streets such as Azkuene or Eskalantegi one pavement belongs to each town. Until the twentieth century, Gascon Occitan was also spoken here.
