Get to know Palma

Palma is the capital and largest city of the Balearic Islands and the capital of Mallorca. The Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Balearicus founded it. King James I of Aragon took the city in 1229, and it became the capital of its own kingdom.

The city sits in the centre of the Bay of Palma, between the Serra de na Burguesa and the Prat de Sant Jordi. Several streams cross it on their way to the Mediterranean, such as the Riera and the Torrent Gros. The Cabrera Archipelago, far from the city itself, also belongs to the municipality.
