A town in Córdoba province on the Genil, close to where it meets the Guadalquivir, known for its oranges.
Palma del Río is a municipality in the province of Córdoba, Andalusia, bordering the province of Seville to the west. Its historic centre has been protected as a site of cultural interest since 2002, with the convent of Santa Clara, the church of La Asunción and the Portocarrero palace. The old town walls and the castle-alcazaba, both of Moorish origin, complete the ensemble.
The town sits on almost flat land on the banks of the Genil, very close to the Guadalquivir. Besides Palma del Río itself, the municipality includes villages such as El Calonge, founded by the National Institute of Colonisation. Farming drives the economy, from orange groves to industrial estates that process the harvest.
