Get to know Orio

Orio is a fishing town in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country. The old centre lies on the Oria River, roughly a mile from its mouth on the Bay of Biscay. Sculptor Jorge Oteiza and singer-songwriter Benito Lertxundi were born here.

Rowing regattas are the town's best-known sport, and its crew races in yellow. New housing has grown on the drained marshes between the town and the beach. Euskotren's coastal line, the N-634 road and the A-8 motorway serve Orio.
