Oñati is a town in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country, in the comarca of Alto Deba. It is the largest municipality of the province. It lies in a valley surrounded by green mountains.

The Basque name roughly means place of many hills. Oñati was a powerful lordly town that became a county. The Sancti Spiritus University, the first in the Basque Country, was founded here in 1543.
