A baroque town laid out on a grid around a glass factory, 50 km from Madrid.
Nuevo Baztán is a municipality southeast of Madrid, near Alcalá de Henares, in the Community of Madrid and the comarca of Cuenca del Henares. Its historic centre dates from 1709 to 1713, when it was built as housing for the workers of a glass factory founded by Juan de Goyeneche. The name comes from the Baztán valley in Navarre, where Goyeneche was born.
The streets form an orthogonal grid, a layout that experts have called an example of Spanish baroque urbanism. Goyeneche commissioned the design of the buildings from the architect José Benito Churriguera. The Goyeneche palace and the church of San Francisco Javier are listed as cultural heritage, and since 2021 the town has been among Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España. Modern housing estates, Eurovillas among them, sit beside the old centre.
