Get to know Níjar

Níjar is a municipality in the east of the province of Almería, Andalusia, between the foothills of the Sierra Alhamilla and the Mediterranean coast. It is the main town of the Campo de Níjar and borders Carboneras, Lucainena de las Torres, Turrillas and Almería. Since 2019 its old town has been part of Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España.

Besides the town of Níjar, the municipality has thirty-seven other localities, among them Campohermoso, San Isidro de Níjar and San José. Much of its land lies in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, recognised by UNESCO as a Geopark in 1999. Greenhouse farming and tourism are the main sources of income, with San José as a watersports centre.
