Motril is the capital of the Costa Granadina comarca, in the province of Granada, on the Mediterranean coast. It is the second most populous municipality in the province. The main town lies a few kilometres inland, separated from the Port of Motril by the Guadalfeo delta.
The municipality takes in settlements such as El Varadero, Carchuna, Calahonda, Puntalón, Playa Granada, Los Tablones, Las Ventillas, La Garnatilla, La Perla and La Chucha. Its port handles both trade and fishing, and also has a marina, the Real Club Náutico de Motril. On the surrounding plain, cherimoyas and avocados are the main crops.
