Get to know Melilla

Melilla is an autonomous city of Spain in North Africa, on the eastern side of Cape Three Forks in the Rif. Christians, Muslims and Jews have lived here together since the nineteenth century, alongside a small Sindhi Hindu community. Until its Statute of Autonomy, Melilla was a regular municipality of the province of Málaga.

The fortress of Melilla la Vieja, built between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, holds the only Gothic chapel in Africa. In the Ensanche district stands one of Spain's finest collections of Modernisme architecture. Ferries link the port with Málaga, Motril and Almería, and the city also has a small airport.
