Manzanares el Real is a town in the north of the Community of Madrid. Its best-known landmark is the Castillo de los Mendoza, built in the fifteenth century. The Manzanares river crosses the municipality and forms the Santillana reservoir.

Right by the town rises La Pedriza, part of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares biosphere reserve. Neighbouring municipalities are Soto del Real, Colmenar Viejo, El Boalo, Navacerrada and Rascafría.
