Get to know Mahón

Maó, historically known in English as Port Mahon, is the capital and second largest town of Menorca, on the island's east coast. It is the seat of the Island Council of Menorca. Mayonnaise is thought to have originated here and taken its name from the town.

The harbour is long, deep and sheltered, and its water stays mostly clear. The easternmost point of the Balearic Islands and of all Spain lies within the municipality. Besides the commercial port, Maó has Menorca Airport, the Mateu Orfila Hospital and the Isabel II Fortress at La Mola.
