Get to know Universidad

Universidad is a neighbourhood of Madrid's Centro district, originally known as Barrio de Maravillas. Historically its limits were San Bernardo, San Vicente Ferrer, Fuencarral and Carranza streets. Today it extends to Princesa, Gran Vía, Fuencarral, Carranza and Alberto Aguilera streets.

Its name comes from the Caserón de San Bernardo, the former seat of the University of Madrid. In the Plaza del Dos de Mayo stands the arch of the old Monteleón barracks, where the soldiers Luis Daoíz and Pedro Velarde resisted. During the Movida years it was the centre of the Madrid Movida, with bars such as La Vía Láctea and El Penta.
