Get to know Leganès

Leganés is a city in the Community of Madrid, southwest of the capital and part of its metropolitan area. Founded as Legamar under Alfonso X, it grew fast in the mid-20th century and has since built up its own public services, industry and shops. The Royal Walloon Guards Barracks, designed by Sabatini, now belong to the Charles III University of Madrid.

The city lies on a plain of the Inner Plateau crossed by the Butarque stream. It borders the Madrid districts of Carabanchel, Latina and Villaverde, along with Alcorcón, Getafe and Fuenlabrada. The municipality also includes the Sur area and Polvoranca, with its hermitage and one of the largest semi-urban parks in the region.
