Laguardia is a municipality in the province of Álava, in the Basque Country, 64 km from Vitoria. It belongs to the comarca of Rioja Alavesa and stands on a hill ringed by a wall that King Sancho the Strong of Navarre had built.
Five old gates still stand: Mercadal, Carnicerías, Páganos, San Juan and Santa Engracia. The streets keep a medieval feel, and the economy rests on wine, with many wineries of its own. It is the only Basque town in the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain association. Páganos is part of the municipality.
