Get to know La Unión

La Unión is a municipality in the Region of Murcia, in the comarca of Campo de Cartagena y Mar Menor. It was founded in 1869 by joining the villages of Garbanzal and Herrerías, then part of Cartagena. Its mining hills supplied silver and lead to the Late Roman Republic, and the mining boom left notable modernist architecture, led by the Market building.

The municipality includes La Unión, Roche and Portmán. On the landward side it is surrounded entirely by Cartagena, linked to the town by a regular train. Winters are balmy, and the town is best known today for the Cante de las Minas festival, of International Tourist Interest.
