A Montsià town on the Ebro Delta, with a fishing port by the lagoon of Port dels Alfacs.
La Ràpita, formerly Sant Carles de la Ràpita, is a town in the Montsià comarca, in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia. Charles III founded it as a port for trade with the Spanish colonies, built in the neoclassical style, and much of it stayed unfinished after his death. Today it is known for rice and salt, for its fishing port with shellfish and prawns, and for tourism.
The municipality covers the south-west of the Ebro Delta, including the Trabucador isthmus and the Banya peninsula, which close off the salt water lagoon of Port dels Alfacs. The town sits on the coast near the mouth of the lagoon. Early this century it grew fast, with many new apartments and residential buildings.
