L'Escala is a municipality in the south-east of the comarca of Alt Empordà, in the province of Girona, on the shores of the Mediterranean. It sits on the Costa Brava, between the southern end of the Gulf of Roses and Cala Montgó. It is an important fishing port and tourist centre, with a festival dedicated to its famous anchovies.

The ruins of Empúries and the medieval village of Sant Martí d'Empúries lie within its territory. It forms part of the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park and of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park. Its parts are L'Escala, Les Corts, Camps dels Pilans, Empúries, La Palanca, Sant Martí d'Empúries, La Coma and Sinclaus.
